GuideRecommended ageFilms and series

All three Cars films are rated “Tous publics” (all audiences) in France, but they are not all suitable for the same age. The US nonprofit Common Sense Media recommends Cars from age 5, Cars 3 from age 6 and Cars 2 from age 8, because of its guns and the characters who are killed in it. On Disney+ France, Cars 2 is rated 6+, while Cars and Cars 3 are rated 0+. For the youngest children, the organization recommends the Cars Toons shorts, each just a few minutes long, from age 4. This guide goes through the scenes that can be upsetting, film by film.

Summary

What Age Is Cars Suitable For? The Short Answer

There is no legal minimum age: in France, the exhibition certificates of all three films carry the rating “Tous publics” (all audiences). The French scale actually jumps straight from “Tous publics” to a ban on under-12s: there is no “6 and up” rating for cinema releases.

For an age recommendation, the US nonprofit Common Sense Media gives guidance for each film, set out in the list below. These are recommendations, not official ratings.

  • Cars (2006): age 5 and up according to Common Sense Media; 0+ on Disney+ France.
  • Cars 2 (2011): age 8 and up; 6+ on Disney+ France.
  • Cars 3 (2017): age 6 and up; 0+ on Disney+ France.
  • Cars Toons: age 4 and up.
  • Cars on the Road (2022 series): age 6 and up; 6+ on Disney+ France.

A word of caution: Disney+'s 0+ is a platform rating tier, not a recommendation for toddlers. Likewise, the “Tous publics” rating only means that no legal restriction applies.

The Official Age Ratings, Film by Film

In France, Cars, Cars 2 and Cars 3 each received a “Tous publics” certificate, with no warning attached. In the United States, all three films are rated G, the American equivalent of “Tous publics”.

The United Kingdom is the exception: Cars has been rated PG (parental guidance) there since its release in 2006, a rating confirmed on August 26, 2026, for its theatrical re-release, while Cars 2 and Cars 3 are rated U (universal). The BBFC, the British classification body, points to mild bad language in the original English dialogue and to scenes of danger: a character nearly crushed by trucks on the highway, then nearly hit by a train at a railroad crossing, and a car that leaves the track and crashes during a race but is not hurt.

On Disney+ France, as of October 2026, Cars and Cars 3 are rated 0+, while Cars 2 and the series Cars on the Road are rated 6+. For Cars 3, the platform also warns that some flashing light sequences may affect photosensitive viewers.

Cars (2006): The Night on the Highway and Frank

In this first film, Common Sense Media, which recommends it from age 5, mainly points to scenes of peril: crashes in which parts break off, and a gang of cars that surround a truck and push it dangerously to the side.

These cars make up the tuner gang. During the night drive, the gang plays music to lull Mack to sleep, while Boost and Wingo nudge him from one side of the road to the other. Having fallen out of the trailer in which Mack is hauling him, Lightning McQueen wakes up alone in the middle of the highway to the blare of a truck's horn, and only just gets out of its way.

Contributors to IMDb's Parents Guide also mention the tractor-tipping night, when Lightning and Mater tip over sleeping tractors: Frank, a big combine harvester with a spinning blade, chases the two friends, who escape from the field just in time. In the story itself, Frank never actually chops anyone up: that only happens in a nightmare Lightning has.

Lastly, in the final race, Chick Hicks deliberately rams The King, who is left unable to carry on.

Cars 2: Spies, Guns and Character Deaths

Cars 2 marks a change in tone: it is a spy film. Common Sense Media recommends it from age 8 and finds its G rating a little surprising, given how prominent guns are in the film and the fact that characters are killed. Parents who review it on the organization's site even advise waiting until age 10.

Right from the opening, the spy Leland Turbo is found reduced to a metal cube. Later, Professor Zündapp, alias Professor Z, captures an American agent and kills him by turning his electromagnetic weapon up to full power: the agent catches fire, then explodes off-screen.

That agent is Rod “Torque” Redline. During the first race, three racers also catch fire, hit by the same weapon, disguised as a television camera. Over the course of the film, other weapons, including a machine gun, appear now and then. Yet the BBFC, which rates Cars 2 U in the United Kingdom, takes the view that these weapons are never used to injure other characters: they only make cars lose control and crash. So it reads these scenes differently from Common Sense Media.

When it came out, some critics found the film too violent for a G rating, and Disney+ France now rates it 6+.

Another point that often comes up: Doc Hudson is absent from Cars 2. He dies off-screen between the first and second films, and the circumstances are never explained; we do learn, among other things, that the Piston Cup has been renamed the Hudson Hornet Piston Cup in his memory. Paul Newman, who voiced him in the original English version, died of cancer in September 2008, before Cars 2.

Cars 3: Lightning McQueen's Crash and the Derby

Common Sense Media recommends Cars 3 from age 6 and considers it less violent than Cars 2 and more heartwarming, despite a few intense scenes.

The scene to prepare for is Lightning's crash in the last race of the season, in Los Angeles, where he loses control, hits the wall and rolls over and over. But Lightning does not die, and four months later he has recovered and decides to keep racing.

This crash was already at the heart of the first teaser, released online on November 21, 2016. In under a minute, the video mostly shows cars filmed at car level, then Lightning tumbling amid the debris, before the line “From this moment, everything will change.” Some parents found this teaser unsuitable for children, going so far as to say it could traumatize them.

At the Thunder Hollow derby, Miss Fritter, the undefeated champion, is known for terrifying her opponents. She is a bus bristling with chains and saws, and she can breathe fire. The BBFC notes that cars get rammed there and are briefly threatened by a circular saw, without any of them being hurt, in a scene played for laughs from start to finish.

In a flashback, the film also shows Doc Hudson's racing crash.

Cars Shorts and Series: What Age Are They For?

For the youngest children, the Cars Toons are a good place to start. These shorts last only a few minutes; Common Sense Media recommends them from age 4, and some parents even consider them suitable from age 3. In France, the series aired on TF1 in 2009 under the title “Martin se la raconte”; it then continued with Tales from Radiator Springs and came to an end on May 20, 2014.

A few episodes have more intense moments. Monster Truck Mater features a wrestling tournament between monster trucks with aggressive opponents. In El Materdor, the matador episode, there is a moment when Mater is buried and seems to be dead. And in Unidentified Flying Mater, the little UFO Mator is about to be operated on before he is rescued. On Disney+ France, the rating varies from one episode to the next: Tokyo Mater, Rescue Squad Mater, Monster Truck Mater and Unidentified Flying Mater, for example, are rated 6+, while El Materdor, Heavy Metal Mater and Moon Mater are rated 0+.

The short film Mater and the Ghostlight (2006), rated 6+ and 8 minutes long on Disney+ France, tells the legend of a blue light, which then starts chasing Mater through town; the chase is only a prank: the light is really a lantern that Lightning and Guido hooked onto his tow cable. And for Halloween, since 2026 Disney+ France has offered a two-minute short, Cars: Spooky Halloween Adventure, rated 6+, in which Lightning talks Mater into exploring the old haunted garage in Radiator Springs.

The series Cars on the Road, released on Disney+ on September 8, 2022, has nine episodes of around ten minutes each, recommended from age 6 by Common Sense Media.

According to the organization, the scariest moments of the series come in the haunted hotel episode, Lights Out, with real jump scares and nods to adult horror films such as The Shining. Disney+ also describes the first episode, Dino Park, as a nerve-racking prehistoric nightmare.

Finally, for the very youngest, the animated series Cars: Lightning Racers has been announced for 2027 on Disney Jr., whose programming is aimed at 2- to 5-year-olds.
