The Cars timeline in brief: two timelines to tell apart

When people talk about the "timeline" of Cars, there are two things to tell apart: the release timeline (the order in which Pixar put out the films, shorts and series, from 2006 to 2027) and the internal chronology (the order in which events unfold "in-universe").

Good news: for the most part, the two line up. The order is Cars (2006), then Cars 2 (2011), then Cars 3 (2017), and finally the series Cars on the Road (2022), which takes place after Cars 3. There's no prequel or major flashback to shake up the timeline: the release order follows the order of events.

Be careful not to confuse this question with the one about the recommended viewing order, which also folds in the shorts and the Cars Toons. Here, we answer "when does what happen"; for the ideal order in which to watch everything, we point you to our dedicated guide.

The release timeline (2006 → 2027)

Here is the timeline of the official releases. These are verifiable production facts (dates confirmed by Pixar and Disney):

  • Cars — 2006 (US release on June 9, 2006).
  • Mater and the Ghostlight — 2006, the saga's first short, released as a DVD bonus.
  • Cars Toons "Mater's Tall Tales" — the first series of shorts, aired from 2008 to 2012.
  • Cars 2 — 2011 (US release on June 24, 2011).
  • Cars Toons "Tales from Radiator Springs" — the second series of shorts, 2013-2014.
  • Cars 3 — 2017 (US release on June 16, 2017).
  • Cars on the Road — Disney+ series streaming from September 8, 2022.
  • Cars: Lightning Racers — animated series announced for Disney Jr., expected in 2027.

Worth noting: the franchise also includes spin-off films (Planes in 2013 and Planes: Fire & Rescue in 2014), originally produced by DisneyToon Studios. They share the same world populated by vehicles, but aren't part of the "Cars" series proper.

The "in-universe" chronology: when everything happens

Pixar has never published an official timeline with precise internal dates. What we know for certain is that the three feature films follow one another in their release order: Cars, then Cars 2, then Cars 3.

Cars on the Road is explicitly presented by Disney as taking place after the events of Cars 3: in it, Lightning McQueen and Mater set off on a road trip across the United States to reach the wedding of Mater's sister. So it is, to date, the most "recent" point in the internal chronology. Some community entries place the series roughly five years after Cars 3, but that specific gap is a fan estimate rather than data officially confirmed by the studio.

More broadly, the exact number of years between each film in the universe isn't canon. Fan resources (such as the Pixar Cars Wiki) offer internal dates by mapping the gaps onto the real release dates, but these are community reconstructions, not information settled by Pixar.

Where do the shorts and Cars Toons fit in?

Mater and the Ghostlight (2006) is the most agreed-upon placement: the short takes place shortly after the events of Cars 1, in Radiator Springs, with the characters already settled into town.

The Cars Toons "Mater's Tall Tales" (2008-2012) are a case apart. They are deliberately exaggerated stories that Mater tells Lightning McQueen (time travel, an adventure on the Moon, improbable stunts...). Their "canon" status is fuzzy by nature: better to treat them as whimsical tales than as episodes to date precisely on the timeline.

The second series, "Tales from Radiator Springs" (2013-2014), also ties into the everyday life of the little town and its residents. Here again, no official internal date exists: you can reasonably attach them to "the Radiator Springs era" without any more precision.

What comes next? Cars 4 and Lightning Racers

As of today (July 2026), no Cars 4 is officially confirmed as a feature film. In late 2023, Pixar mentioned having "other Cars projects in the works," without specifying the format or the schedule. Until a firm announcement is made, a possible Cars 4 remains a hypothesis, not a certainty.

As for what's already been announced, an animated series aimed at a younger audience, Cars: Lightning Racers, is planned for Disney Jr. in 2027. It is presented as an extension of the universe rather than a work that would rewrite the existing chronology.

As it stands, the story's official timeline therefore ends with Cars on the Road (2022), with new productions expected in the years to come.

FAQ — Frequently asked questions

In what chronological order do the Cars films take place?
The events follow the release order: Cars (2006), then Cars 2 (2011), then Cars 3 (2017), and finally the series Cars on the Road (2022), which sits after Cars 3. No prequel disrupts this sequence.

Does Cars on the Road take place before or after Cars 3?
After. Disney presents the series as taking place after the events of Cars 3, with Lightning McQueen and Mater on a road trip to the wedding of Mater's sister. Some fan resources suggest "about five years after," but that specific figure isn't officially confirmed.

How many years separate each film in the Cars universe?
Pixar has never given official internal dates. The estimates you find (mapped onto the gaps between the real releases) come from community resources like the Pixar Cars Wiki: they are fan reconstructions, not canon.

Is there a Cars 4?
No Cars 4 film is officially confirmed as of today (July 2026). Pixar only mentioned in late 2023 "other Cars projects in the works." A series, Cars: Lightning Racers, is however announced for Disney Jr. in 2027.
