A Friend of Lightning in Changing Times

In Cars 3, Cal is one of the few drivers still close to Lightning McQueen — they joke together on the grid. But the arrival of Next-Gen vehicles like Jackson Storm changes everything: outclassed and demotivated, Cal eventually retires, symbolizing this generation of drivers swept away by the new wave.

Voice Actor and Real-Life Nod

A delicious detail for racing fans: Cal Weathers is voiced in the original version by Kyle Petty, a real NASCAR driver and son of Richard Petty — who previously lent his voice to The King. The number 42 echoes the Petty family: Kyle Petty wore it in NASCAR, and the Pixar wiki also sees it as a reference to 1942, the birth year of Lynda Petty, his mother — who fittingly voices Cal's aunt, Lynda Weathers.
